TOPEKA – May 1, 2024 – Governor Laura Kelly today revealed that the total tax collections for April soared to $1.42 billion, surpassing expectations by a notable margin of $101 million, marking a remarkable 7.7% increase over the monthly estimate. Moreover, these collections demonstrate a robust 9.6% rise from April 2023.

Governor Laura Kelly emphasized the significance of these revenue figures, stating, “These revenue numbers underscore how important it is to provide responsible tax relief now. I remain committed to cutting taxes in a fiscally responsible, comprehensive manner that doesn’t jeopardize the progress we’ve made.”

Secretary of Revenue Mark Burghart attributed the surplus for April primarily to the processing of 63,000 additional ‘balance due’ checks from taxpayers compared to the same period last year. He explained, “A combination of two additional processing days and recently upgraded check remittance technology, by Fairfax Software at the Department of Revenue have allowed payments to be processed faster and much more efficiently.”

Secretary Burghart further elaborated, “The spike in processed payments for April is just a carrying forward of payments that would normally be processed in May. As a result, individual income tax receipts for May will likely be lower than the estimate.”

Governor Kelly’s announcement reflects a buoyant economic outlook for the state, with prudent fiscal management and strategic technological enhancements contributing to enhanced tax processing efficiency.
